Hey there. A long time ago in a galaxy not so far away, I was an avid APW Borg follower. Suffice to say, in the interim, I have 1) switched to OS X, and 2) started playing 4.1. At this point, I’m not interested in learning how to take your current product and figure out a Mac-specific make process. Rather, I’d like to understand the mechanics of the Borg itself with the goal of recreating it as a python shell that wouldn’t necessarily require hard coding much of the Borg into the executable itself.
So, some questions that may or may be partially or wholly redundant:
1) to what extent has your paradigm changed from Ben Harrison’s original creation?
2) how often do you modify the .c and .h files rather than tweaking BORG.txt?
3) how do you know what needs to be compiled and what can simply be added to the text parameter file?
Please advise. Sincerely,
Jon Goldberg
Hey APWhite & Jon
I’ve been heavily in the process of modernizing Angband and would like to incorporate a Borg into it. I’m also looking for direction for the mechanics.
Marc
Started running 3.4.1 on a Centos server in my garage, and the Borg is working fine. Best character so far is a Half-Troll Warrior, and I’m currently trying to get him to win the game. Whenever his Resists or Weapon Slays increase, I save the game, and then restore the save game whenever he dies.
Some observations:
* I don’t see any Half-Troll Warriors in the list of Borgs that have won the game. I’m sure the “real list” of winners is much bigger than the published one, but it kind of makes me wonder if that particular combination is just not very good.
* The Borg makes it to level 100, stays there for maybe 5-10 seconds, then recalls back to town … and then restarts at level 1. I assume this is expected behavior?
* The dozen times that he actually stayed on level 100, he’s either been killed by Morgoth or by a Black Reaver.
* Occasionally the Borg will get stuck between levels. As I write this, he’s stuck between L14 and L15. I tried letting this go for a while to see if it would “fix itself”, but the Borg will do this even if he runs out of food. I generally “nudge” the Borg back to town via manual Recall, which solves the problem. (Is this what you mean by “munchkin”?)
Once this Warrior finally wins the game, I’m going to stop monitoring it remotely and just run it in “cheat death” mode in the garage. I’ll probably set borg_dump_level and borg_save_death to 40, as I’m not really interested in Borgs at a lower level than that.
I’m retired now, so I have more time to devote to this hobby. Thanks for all the work you’ve done on the Borg.
One other thing: Whenever I get close to level 100, I start seeing a warning about how the Borg is trying to retrieve “*Heal*” potions from “Home”. I had a quick look at my Home inventory, and saw all kinds of really great stuff in there … stuff that could prove useful when fighting Morgoth. Unfortunately, it seems like the Borg knows how to put stuff in there, but not how to actually get it out to make use of it. There’s 41 potions of *Heal* and 41 of Life there, but they never seem to come out.
I might have beaten Morgoth already if I had those. They look pretty awesome.
BTW, the Half-Troll Warrior borg has managed to kill Sauron. Only Morgoth remains.
